Riecine

The history of the Riecine winery began with the purchase of the land by the Englishman John Dunkley and his wife Palmina Abbagnano in 1971. The land belonged to the monastery of Badia a Coltibuono on the high hills behind the town of Gaiole in Chianti. Actually Riecine as a toponym had existed for centuries and the presence of the vine in Riecine is already testified in the Middle Ages. However, it was in the 70s thanks to John Dunkley that Riecine became a protagonist of Chianti and the first Chianti Classico produced was in 1973. Riecine wines immediately distinguished themselves for a pure, fresh and elegant style. Throughout its history Riecine has been loyal to Sangiovese and traditional Tuscan grape varieties. The well-known oenologist Carlo Ferrini was consultant in the very first years and was then followed by Sean O'Callaghan, who began his experience in Chianti working in Riecine from 1991 until 2014 (today Sean O'Callaghan is a Chianti Classico producer at Tenuta di Corleone). After the death of the founders, the Riecine estate was acquired by Lana Frank, who gave continuity to the project by investing in the creation of a new functional and eco-sustainable winery. Riecine works organically and also adopts biodynamic practices. They consider environmental sustainability an important value. Since 2015 the operations have been directed by the young winemaker Alessandro Campatelli, who has raised the quality level of the wines even more. The Chianti Classico, in its various types, represents the majority of Riecine's production; other interesting products are the rosé obtained from an early harvest and two pure Sangiovese grapes outside the appellation: the Riecine di Riecine, aged only in concrete egg and Gioia, one of the great Supertuscans, aged in barrique. The main characteristic of Riecine is that of having very high vineyards: between 430 and 600 meters on the mountains that mark the border to the east between Chianti and Valdarno. The vineyards have different soil characteristics but all enjoy a cool microclimate with accentuated temperature ranges and excellent exposure. This is why Riecine wines have a subtle taste, dominated by the presence of a precious acidity, which makes them vibrant, refreshing and long-lived.
