Prunotto

Prunotto is a large Piedmontese winery based in Alba with vineyards in the Langhe and Monferrato, owned by the Antinori.
But Prunotto has an important history and is a leading name in the evolution of Barolo and Barbaresco. Alfredo Prunotto bought the cooperative “Ai vini delle Langhe” in 1920 to manage it with his wife, and gave the winery its name. He worked hard and achieved excellent results in a short time, so much so that he was able to export Barolo and Barbaresco first to South America and then to North America as well. At the end of his career, after 26 years, he sold the prosperous business to a great Langhe winemaker: Beppe Colla.
The Prunotto Winery in 1956 begins a new phase during which it will be the first winery in the Langhe to make wines from a single vineyard. These are Barolo Bussia and Barbaresco Montestefano from the 1961 harvest. Giacosa and Gaja will produce their famous single cru wines only in 1967. Renato Ratti's map of Barolo vineyards comes out in 1975. The crus system, of which Prunotto was a precursor, begins to assert itself.
After a financial crisis Beppe Colla is no longer able to support the business alone and in 1989 Antinori enters the property together with Beppe Colla, who will be in charge of production until 1994. From that date Prunotto has been in complete control of Antinori. Antinori acquired new vineyards in strategic positions such as Bric Turot in Barbaresco.
Today Prunotto owns 65 hectares of vineyards in the Langhe and Monferrato and pursues the traditional style that has always distinguished it.
