Mastroberardino

The family name Mastroberardino represents a real dynasty established in Irpinia, in Atripalda, since the 18th century. It has been - and is - a leading brand of Campania viticulture, it has dictated the tradition and the market. In Irpinia it almost played a monopolist role, having no competitors until the 1990s.
The foundation of the company dates back to 1878 when the first official harvest occurred and Mastoberardino began selling bottles with its name. These bottles were sold throughout Italy and were exported mainly to South America and the United States, where the first customers were Italian immigrants.
The great merit of Mastroberardino was to have preserved local grape varieties such as Fiano, Greco and Aglianico. In fact, after the crisis of the two World Wars and the attack of phylloxera, a parasite that destroyed much of the European vineyard, Mastroberardino prevented the more popular and productive grapes such as Barbera, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Trebbiano from taking the place of native ones. He convinced the farmers by paying a higher price for the grapes of Irpinia’s native varieties. Today the tenth generation of the Mastroberardino family manages the business, persevering in the defense of territorial peculiarities. Mastroberardino wines have an elegant, sometimes austere style, linked to the territory and are often very long-lived.
Today the estate includes 250 hectares of vineyards in several suitable areas of Campania and annually produces 1,800,000 bottles.
