Zwack is a historic Hungarian distillery based in Budapest, famous for the production of Unicum bitter liqueur. The distillery was founded in 1840, but the production of Unicum is said to have started 50 years earlier expressly for Emperor Joseph II. Zwack soon became one of the largest distilleries in central Europe until it stopped operating following the damage suffered during World War II.
After the war it was nationalized, but the family kept the original recipe of Unicum a secret until it regained control in 1989, after the fall of the communist regime. The company has been listed on the stock exchange since 1993, but management is still in the hands of the Zwack family.
