Podere Sapaio is a boutique winery in the heart of Bolgheri, which has distinguished itself for wines of great personality. It was founded by Massimo Piccin in 1999 who moved from Veneto to Bolgheri at 30 to pursue his passion and become a winemaker in the wake of the success that Bolgheri wines were enjoying. He bought an 8-hectare farm with a house to live in Scopaio, from which he will take the name of his project: Sapaio. In 2000 he started planting the vineyard and in 2004 he made his first harvest. Its vineyards are designed in a modern way with very high planting density and are cultivated with Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc and Petit verdot. Over time it has acquired new vineyards up to the current 25 hectares of which 16 ha area in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, within the Bolgheri DOC and 9 hectares in the municipality of Bibbona, outside the DOC. From the beginning it produces only 2 wines. The most important wine is called Sapaio, initially it was a Bolgheri Superiore DOC, but is now classified as Toscana Rosso IGT as it is also produced with Bibbona grapes. The other wine is Bolgheri Rosso DOC Volpolo. Podere Sapaio is working with certified organic farming.
