Tenute Sella

That of Tenute Sella is a historical reality in the province of Biella in Northern Piedmont. The Sella family is rooted in the wine history of Piedmont and Sardinia and also had a minister in the newborn Italian state: Quintino Sella. The foundation of the farm dates back to 1671, when Comino Sella bought the first vineyard in Lessona. In the nineteenth century the business developed with a considerable expansion of the property and the work of the Sella estates played a very important role in enhancing the wines of Northern Piedmont. In 1870, the minister of the Italian government Quintino Sella offered his Lessona wine to toast the unification of Italy. In recent times Tenute Sella have been the architects of the acknowledgement of the DOC Lessona and Bramaterra: wines of the highest level from a unique territory. The Sella family is also the founder of the bank of the same name and Emidio Sella in 1899, together with Edgardo Mosca, founded the most important winery in Sardinia: Sella & Mosca.

The vineyards of Tenute Sella today extend into three appellations of Northern Piedmont: Lessona, Bramaterra and Coste della Sesia. The main grape variety is Nebbiolo, which is usually vinified here with complementary grapes such as Vespolina, Uva rara and Croatina. The production approach of the Sella Estates is based on principles of environmental sustainability, even if they are not certified. They avoid the use of chemicals and protect the natural balance of the land through integrated viticulture with minimal environmental impact.
