UMBRIA WINES

LAND OF NATIVE WINE GRAPE VARIETIES

The rolling hills of Umbria are extensively planted with vineyards, and in addition to the large wineries that have made the history of wine in the region, there are also small craft wineries and very interesting young producers scattered throughout the region. The best-known Umbrian wine is undoubtedly Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, produced from the native Sagrantino grape in the area surrounding the town of Montefalco. Sagrantino is considered the most tannic of the Italian grape varieties. The wines need years of ageing to achieve a balanced taste, but they give thrilling depth of aroma and structure to those with the patience to wait. When young, they can be paired with sumptuous dishes with rich gravy, such as wild boar stew. The taste of Rosso di Montefalco DOC is something different: here Sagrantino only contributes to the blend, but Sangiovese gains the upper hand.

The red wines of Torgiano also have a Sangiovese base, especially the Riserva version, which has achieved DOCG status. Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG is a structured, evolved wine with a Sangiovese and Canaiolo base and a traditional taste, capable of evolving for many years in the bottle. The long history of the Lungarotti winery bears witness to this fact. Torgiano DOC wines, both white and red, are wines to be drunk young, and are available in various versions. Torgiano Rosso has a Sangiovese base and Torgiano Bianco has a Trebbiano base, but the DOC designation also includes Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and, finally, spumantes and the raisin wine Vin Santo di Torgiano. A very characteristic white grape variety called Grechetto is cultivated in the centre of Umbria. It forms the base for the Colli Martani Grechetto DOC and Grechetto di Todi DOC wines, with their delicately fruity aromas and fresh, well-structured taste. Orvieto is also the most productive wine hub of the region. The Orvieto DOC wines are very popular white wines made from Grechetto and Trebbiano grapes, available in various versions, from dry to sweet, including semi-dry and semi-sweet. Orvieto Classico is produced in the original area, as is the Superiore, but with more limited yields. But that's not all, there are also the Orvieto DOC Vendemmia Tardiva and Orvieto DOC Muffa Nobile types, which are truly extraordinary gems: sweet wines to be paired, preferably, with a cheese platter.
