Irpinia
IRPINIA WHITES
THE BEST WINES OF SOUTHERN ITALY
Irpinia is an excellent wine area on the national level. Here, 3 out of the 4 DOCGs in Campania are produced. It is a unique and very special upper hill territory marked by the presence of different geological origins. It is formed by a limestone substrate, like much of the Apennine ridge and connected hills, with layers of clay and schists Today the vineyards in the area grow at different altitudes, from 300 to 650 metres, with varying exposures and soils. Some hills are clayey and poor in limestone, but rich in volcanic materials (Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei), and others are marly with mostly sandstone and limestone. One characteristic type of soil is grey tuff from Campania, of volcanic origin. The territory coincides with the province of Avellino, it is blessed with southern sunshine, where some of the best southern Italian reds and whites are produced. The main red grape in Irpinia is Aglianico, used to produce DOCG Taurasi wines. Taurasi is also known as the Barolo of the south, due to its evolved character, strength and longevity. But in Irpinia we can also find red wines produced from local varieties such as Piedirosso, Sciascinoso, while international grape varieties are quite rare.
Falanghina, Greco, Fiano: the white wines of Irpinia
The main white grapes grown in Irpinia are Falanghina, Greco and Fiano. Each has its own special features in terms of aroma and flavour, but all three here produce generous wines with a rich body and a broad aromatic and taste spectrum. Acidity and sapidity make them lively wines. Compared to Greco and Fiano, Falanghina produces simpler, floral wines with a fresh, balanced flavour. Greco is the variety used in DOCG Greco di Tufo white wines, and in fact around the municipality of Tufo this grape variety gives its best. Greco di Tufo whites have character, fresh aromas of flowers, citrus fruits and almond, and stand out for their quite sharp acidity on the palate. Fiano grapes are used to produce Fiano di Avellino DOCG wines with a tendency to evolve, round and enveloping, with a less sharp acidity and excellent minerality. Fiano has a characteristic hazelnut aroma.
