Lungarotti

Lungarotti is a worthy protagonist of the modern history of Italian wine and is a giant in the Umbrian wine scene with 2.5 million bottles produced annually. In 1962 Giorgio Lungarotti founded the business with an important investment and a clear project: that of making the wines of Torgiano great.
In Torgiano his family had already been involved in agriculture and in the production of bulk wines since the 18th century.
Giorgio worked on two fronts: that of production and that of communication.
Since 1964 he has been producing the wine that made him famous: the Rubesco, based on Sangiovese and Canaiolo. Although made with local varieties, it was an innovative wine for the time, obtained from a meticulous selection in the vineyard and a vinification in wood as a long-aging wine. The wine exhibits the austere and elegant character of Sangiovese, thanks to the particularly suitable vineyard of origin. From 1974 the name of the vineyard will be added to the label: "Monticchio". The DOC Torgiano was born in 1968 inspired by Lungarotti’s Rubesco wine.
Giorgio Lungarotti is recognized as the man who made Umbrian wine known to the world. In Torgiano, beyond the group’s headquarters, Lungarotti has set up a real wine museum, that proves the attachment of this family to tradition and its land.
When Giorgio passed away in 1999, his daughters took over the business. Since 2001 Lungarotti has an estate in Montefalco too, in the Sagrantino area. This has converted to organic farming. Lungarotti, present in two main production poles of the Umbria region, confirms its leading role and manages a total of 250 hectares of vineyards.
