Well-known Cannonau and Vermentino

In addition to the Sardinia of the Costa Smeralda, with its famous and enviable crystal-clear waters, the island is largely dedicated to the production of wine made from native grape varieties, has improved. Vermentino di Sardegna DOC and Cannonau di Sardegna DOC are the most well-known Sardinian wines, the former being white and the latter red. In fact, Sardinia’s heritage of typical grape varieties is heterogeneous, changing from area to area and reserving some interesting surprises. Vermentino di Sardegna DOC is a wine with a floral bouquet, moderately structured, well-balanced, and savoury. But it is in the arid, granitic soil of Gallura that Vermentino flourishes best, developing unparalleled structure and complexity. Vermentino di Gallura DOCG are structured, warm, fragrant white wines with mineral notes

The Cannonau grape variety is cultivated all over the world under different names: in Spain as Garnacha tinta, in France as Grenache, in Tuscany Alicante, in Veneto as Tai rosso. It is a grape that can withstand very hot climates and is versatile in winemaking. Cannonau di Sardegna DOC wines can be fruity and drinkable or robust and complex. They are also vinified as rosé and raisin wines and as dry and sweet fortified wines. On the hills inland from the Gulf of Asinara, the Muscat Blanc grape variety is also grown, from which Moscato di Sorso-Sennori DOC is produced, generally vinified in a semi-sweet version. In the province of Alghero the native Torbato (white berry) and Cagnulari (black berry) varieties are a characteristic of the area and are included in the blend used for Alghero DOC wines. In the province of Oristano, we find two original, traditional, rare white wines, Vernaccia di Oristano DOC is the first. The second is Malvasia di Bosa DOC, a wine available in many types, it is made in dry, semi-sweet, sweet, raisin and even spumante versions. In the coastal strip of Sulcis, another grape of Spanish origin called Carignan is grown: Carignano del Sulcis DOC wines are complex and long-living - thanks to their fine tannins - especially in the Riserva type. Mandrolisai DOC are red wines produced in the centre of the island from a blend of three native grape varieties: Bovale, Cannonau and Monica.
