Alto Adige whites are known for their strong, intense aroma. The most fragrant of all is Gewürztraminer, the aromatic grape variety par excellence, grown pretty much all over the region, but the privileged area is that of the lowlands around the municipality of Tramin. In this area, elegant Pinot Blancs, comfortable Müller-Thurgau, sharp Sauvignon Blancs and smooth Chardonnay are also produced. Slightly further to the north, in Überetsch, in addition to the above-mentioned varieties we also find interesting wines obtained from Yellow Muscat, sometimes vinified dry, and other times, sweet. Interesting traditional method spumante are made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The whites in these areas are intense and aromatic and may also be evolved and structured when aged in wood. Moving further north, in Val Venosta and Valle Isarco we find subtler, sharper wines with great acidity and minerality made from Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Kerner and Grüner Veltliner. These are always very elegant and enveloping wines, perfect with shellfish, fresh cheeses, pasta and rice dishes with vegetables and flans.
