Bianchi Alto Adige

ALTO ADIGE WHITE WINES

WITH A strong AND intense aroma

Every year, the wines from Alto Adige win prizes and are awarded very high scores in the guides. In proportion to the quantity produced, which unfortunately is very low, they are the most prize-winning wines in Italy. The territory coincides with the province of Bolzano, and there is a slight prevalence of whites over reds and a small, but interesting, production of traditional method spumantes. There is little space for grape cultivation in the Alpine territory of Alto Adige, yet the region has an ancient wine-producing tradition, with several findings bearing witness to this. The vineyards lie between the valley floor and the mountain slopes, at altitudes which in some cases may even reach 1000 metres. The vineyard soil varies from the more calcareous to those with a prevalence of clay and sand; in some cases, hard rock rich in minerals can be found, including granite and quartz, and one example of this is Valle Isarco; other locations have a layer of volcanic porphyry, including the valley basin of Bolzano and the Terlano area. Generally, the region enjoys a sunny climate; the strong differences in temperature determine the original, intense and precise aromas of Alto Adige wines.

Aromatic white wines of Alto Adige

Alto Adige whites are known for their strong, intense aroma. The most fragrant of all is Gewürztraminer, the aromatic grape variety par excellence, grown pretty much all over the region, but the privileged area is that of the lowlands around the municipality of Tramin. In this area, elegant Pinot Blancs, comfortable Müller-Thurgau, sharp Sauvignon Blancs and smooth Chardonnay are also produced. Slightly further to the north, in Überetsch, in addition to the above-mentioned varieties we also find interesting wines obtained from Yellow Muscat, sometimes vinified dry, and other times, sweet. Interesting traditional method spumante are made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The whites in these areas are intense and aromatic and may also be evolved and structured when aged in wood. Moving further north, in Val Venosta and Valle Isarco we find subtler, sharper wines with great acidity and minerality made from Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Kerner and Grüner Veltliner. These are always very elegant and enveloping wines, perfect with shellfish, fresh cheeses, pasta and rice dishes with vegetables and flans.
