ABRUZZO

HOME OF MONTEPULCIANO AND TREBBIANO D’ABRUZZO WINES

Abruzzo is a very productive region of central Italy. The wines from this area are both white and red and, in recent years, their general quality, in all versions and designations, has been greatly increasing thanks to forward-looking producers and efficient winegrowers’ cooperatives. Most of the vineyards are in the hilly area between the high mountains Appennini to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The two most popular grape varieties of Abruzzo are Montepulciano and Trebbiano. We also find Cococciola, a native white grape variety that gives delicate, fruity, fresh wines. There are also wines produced from the white grape varieties Pecorino and Passerina, as well as Chardonnay.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC wines are generous, with deep colours and scents of cherry, black cherry and dense tannins. They have extractive and alcoholic strength, can evolve over time and, if aged in wooden barrels, they acquire complexity with spicy aromas. Montepulciano is a versatile grape variety in winemaking and can rise to young, fresh, drinkable red wines, wines for ageing and fine vintages. It is also vinified as a sweet wine from dried grapes and as a spumante after white fermentation (without skins). The Loreto Aprutino area is home to some of the most popular and most highly awarded winemakers. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG wines are aristocratic and robust. Montepulciano grapes are also used to make a rosé wine, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC, with a fruity, balanced flavour.

<p ">Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC wines are white wines with good structure and the Riserva version in particular - which is also aged in wooden barrels - is an evolved and complex wine. Some Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC wines take their place among the greatest Italian whites.
