Apulia

PUGLIA WINES

Land of Primitivo and Negroamaro

The second largest region in terms of production after Veneto, Apulia is long, and two seas that strongly affect its climate lap at its shores, guaranteeing mild temperatures all year round. The cultivation of bush-trained vines is not only a legacy of the past, but a necessary condition for the survival of the vines in such a hot, arid environment. It is a land of great red wines, it is famous for its rosés, but also capable of surprising with its spumante and traditional sweet wines. From the province of Foggia comes Sansevero Rosso DOC: a soft, medium-structured wine made from a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. Native to the area is the grape variety Uva di Troia, which is used in many wines, either in blends or pure. The white wines are made from Bombino and Trebbiano grapes. Bombino Nero, Aglianico, Uva di Troia, Primitivo and Bombino Bianco are cultivated on the karst plateau known as the Altopiano delle Murge, in the province of Bari. Castel del Monte Bombino Nero DOCG wines are rosés produced with Bombino Nero cultivated in hilly environments. Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva DOCG are red, full-bodied wines, capable of evolving over time, thanks to their tannic structure. Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva DOCG wines also have a base of Nero di Troia, but are blended. Castel del Monte DOC wines are medium-structured wines to be drunk young, available in several types. With a base of hill-grown Primitivo, Gioia del Colle DOC wines are structured reds.

In the Salento region, we find Primitivo and Negroamaro as the main grape varieties for rich, robust wines. Primitivo di Manduria DOC wines are powerful reds, dominated by their alcoholic strength, only just balanced by a delicate tannic structure. They are intriguing for their complex floral, fruity and spicy aromas. The other red wines of Salento have a Negroamaro base, sometimes blended with Malvasia Nera. Salice Salentino DOC is a heterogeneous designation, in which we find wines of all colours - whites, rosés and reds - as well as spumantes, sweet and fortified wines. Negroamaro-based reds can be fresh for immediate consumption, but the most popular are the structured, evolved versions: marvellous, well-balanced wines in which Negroamaro maintains just the right amount of acidity, even in the hot climate of Salento. The rosé wines of Salento, also with a Negroamaro base, are particularly engaging: the Salice Salentino DOC Rosato wines are full-bodied and fruity, balanced by a pleasant freshness.
