Founded in 1995 in the hilly area in the center of Umbria, Còlpetrone contributed to the fame of Sagrantino di Montefalco, the Umbrian appellation based on the local Sagrantino grape; the wine was elected DOCG appellation in 1992.
Legend has it that the vine was brought to Umbria by some followers of St. Francis of Assisi from Asia Minor and for a long time its consumption was linked to religious functions.
Cólpetrone winery was born with a huge investment and soon achieved excellent results, making Montefalco Sagrantino wine popular even outside Umbria and in international markets. Nowadays Còlpetrone is part of the Tenute del Cerro group owned by the insurance company Unipol; it has 63 hectares of vineyards and produces about 350,000 bottles a year. Beyond Sagrantino they make other red and white wines.
