Valtellina Superiore Prugnolo 2019
Prugnolo is the simplest of Raindoldi’s Valtellina Superiore DOCG wines. In reality it is by no means a simple wine: the grapes are harvested in steep terraces on the south-facing mountain slope between 350 and 650 meters above sea level. They are vinified with an oak-aging of over a year which gives body, roundness and complexity to the wine. It is an extremely tasty wine, easy to drink, supple, with the characteristic refreshing power of mountain wines. It is a pure Nebbiolo, which in Valtellina they call Chiavennasca. The soil where the Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) vines have their roots does not have the limestone and clay of the Langhe; consequently, the wines have a completely different character, they are slender, have delicate tannins and a high freshness and pronounced flavor. They are elegant and versatile wines that age slowly and are really designed for food, they can even match simple dishes, such as pasta, vegetable and cheese pies, stewed fish, white meats.
The grapes are handly-picked in different plots in the villages of Poggiridenti, Montagna in Valtellina, Tresivio and Teglio. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in contact with the skins. After racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages in ised small oak barrels for 15 months.
