Valtellina Superiore Inferno 2019
Inferno is a suggestive name for a wine and refers to one of the sub-areas of the DOCG Valtellina Superiore. This sub-area is called Inferno (which means Hell) because during the day it reaches particularly high temperatures: it's hot as in hell! In fact, it is the area where in addition to the presence of outcropping rock, the slope of the side of the mountain is particularly steep and so the incidence of sunlight on the ground is almost perpendicular, as if one were closer to the equator. Here the Nebbiolo grape, which in Valtellina is called Chiavennasca, ripens both from the point of view of sugars and phenols, so the wines have fuller body and higher presence of tannins.
The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel vats with maceration on the skins. Subsequently the wine ages in barrels of various sizes for over a year.
