Marsala Superiore Riserva Semisecco Targa 2019
Marsala Targa fortified wine inherits the characteristics of the historic Riserva Florio born in 1840 and takes the name “Targa” from an exceptional enterprise: the international car race that Vincenzo Florio wanted to organize along the Sicilian roads in 1906. It is a semi-dry Marsala, ideal paired with blue cheeses and dry pastries, but it can also be an excellent aperitif, served chilled with savory snacks or spicy tapas. Grillo grapes are grown in the townships of Marsala, Petrosino and in the hinterland of Trapani at 50 meters above sea level on scarcely fertile red lands. The vines are bush-trained with 5000 plants per hectare.
The grapes are harvested by hand at advanced ripeness in the second part of September. The grapes are pressed and the liquid must ferments at a controlled temperature in steel vats. The wine is fortified with mistelle, cooked must and wine spirit; this leads to an elevation of the alcohol content up to 19% and an enrichment of sweetness and flavors. The fortified wine then ages in large oak barrels of 1800 liters each for 6 years and finally spends a year in smaller 300 liter barrels. Residual sugars amount to 70 g / l.
