Guatemala
Guatemala
The land of “Rum aged above the clouds”
Guatemala is undoubtedly one of the largest producers of rum. Production of this famous spirit only began in the mid-19th century and for a long time Guatemalan Rum remained exclusively within the country's borders. It is said that Guatemalan rum is aged above the clouds, because of the country’s geography with its characteristic high altitudes.
Today, in any case, it is considered a fine rum with unique characteristics. Here, sugar cane is grown on volcanic soil and ageing takes place at high altitudes, sometimes using the solera method. Guatemalan Rums are only produced in versions aged for at least one year, and since 2010, it has had the “Ron de Guatemala” indication, also recognised by the EU as a controlled designation of origin. Botran and Zacapa are two of the key players in the success of Guatemalan rums.
