Rum is the national beverage of the Dominican Republic. Sugar cane is widely cultivated on the island's coastal plain. All sorts of rums are produced, both white and dark, often industrial, made with molasses, flavoured and sweetened, but there is no shortage of fine products aged for long periods. There are only two distilleries on the island and the most famous brands are Barcelò, which produces a rum that is greatly appreciated throughout the world, and Brugal, the most popular local Rhum.
