Nikka is the best known Japanese Whisky Distillery. The founder, Masataka Taketsuru, learned the art of whiskey distillation during a stay in Scotland in the early 1900s and once back in Japan he first transferred his knowledge to other companies such as Suntory until he even founded Nikka in 1940. Masataka Taketsuru is therefore considered the father of Japanese whisky.
Masataka Taketsuru chose the north of Japan for his first distillery, where the climate is more similar to that of Scotland. Yoichi is located on the sea and is protected by mountains on three sides, just like the Highlands in Scotland. Here the first distillery was born.
Today there are two distilleries, both in northern Japan, so Nikka can also blend whiskys from multiple distilleries according to a practice learned in Scotland.
