Ferrari

"Simply the best sparkling wine cellar in Italy" cit. Essential Guide to Wines of Italy 2021. Ferrari undoubtedly represents excellence in terms of Italian bubbles. With over 5 million bottles of fine sparkling wine produced yearly, it is an exponent of Made in Italy.

Founded over a century ago by Giulio Ferrari from Trentino (northern Italy), the winery has grown and developed with the Lunelli family; today the brothers Camilla, Matteo, Marcello and Alessandro Lunelli direct the operations with the same passion and care from the beginning.

Giulio Ferrari was an oenologist and nurseryman who had the intuition that Trentino was suitable for the production of sparkling wines, as was the Champagne region in France. In 1902 he founded his own business and invited local farmers to grow Chardonnay, which he needed to transform it into quality sparkling wines. After 50 years of success he chose to entrust the business to his friend Bruno Lunelli, owner of a wine shop in the center of Trento (main city of Trentino region).

Lunelli family had to go into debt to buy the Ferrari sparkling wine house - with an annual production of 10,000 bottles at that time - and generation after generation could increase the business and the prestige of the company. Today Ferrari has its own vineyards and still uses to purchase grapes from many local farmers; those grapes are transformed into a varied range of sparkling wines, all made with the Traditional Method of second fermentation in the bottle and all under the appellation Trento DOC.
The company adopts a protocol of care of the vineyard attentive to sustainability that imposes on the farmers from whom it buys grapes, while the owned vineyards are certified organic. The grapes come from all the Trentino valleys and are mostly Chardonnay grapes. Pinot Noir is also used for some labels. The advantage of having vineyards in the mountains allows for ideal conditions for sparkling wine making, as these grapes are rich in precious acidity and flavor compounds, while sugar level is low even when fully ripe. This is possible because all the grapes come from vineyards located at over 300 m of altitude.
