Valtellina Superiore Sassella 2018
When it comes to mountain viticulture, one cannot but think of Valtellina, an area where viticulture is truly heroic, where the vines seem to hang from the rock of the mountain. This is particularly true for the vineyards of Sassella, the area of Valtellina where the rock is particularly outcropping and the vines have very little soil in which to sink their roots. Rainoldi’s Sassella wine comes from terraced vineyards, clinging to the rock, between 290 and 630 meters above sea level in suitable areas in the villages of Castione Andevenno and Sondrio. These are the areas of Triassio and Grisons, where the subsoil is hard rock with ferrous infiltrations. The wine is vinified in the traditional way and maintains a characteristic mineral taste. Sassella wines are considered the most elegant of Valtellina.
The harvest is manual. The grapes ferment with maceration on the skins. The wine also carries out malolactic fermentation and ages in large oak barrels of 25 and 56 hectoliters for 20 months.
