Valle Isarco

Valle Isarco white wines

The most northern vineyards of Italy

The most northern vineyards of Italy are found in Valle Isarco valley. This is a tiny area, where the vineyards run along the banks of the River Isarco from Bolzano to Bressanone. The production is centred on great white wines from the typical vines, with a sharp, mineral character. The Valle Isarco vineyard covers just 300 hectares, which produce just 400,000 bottles a year, but of the highest quality. The vineyards run along the banks of the River Isarco from Bolzano to Bressanone, almost on the Austrian border. In addition to the Northern latitude, the altitude of the vineyards is also significant: from 400 to 800 metres. The soil is particularly rich in minerals on a granitic substrate. Quartz and mica schists can be found in the soil in the form of sandy detritus, which bring out the acidity and aromatic substances in the grapes. The climate is dependent on the altitude and Alpine environment, it is the coolest valley in the province of Bolzano with sunny summers and very sharp temperature variations during the day.

The Alpine wines of Valle Isarco

95% of the wines produced in Valle Isarco are white. They are excellent Alpine white wines, with a smooth, incisive character, produced from German grape varieties. Riesling with a sharp character and well-structured Sylvaners with a fresh taste and characteristic fragrance of aromatic herbs are produced in Valle Isarco. Kerner produces well-structured whites with strong acidity and fruity aromas, while Müller-Thurgau are more balanced. Pinot Blanc is not grown in Valle Isarco, although the highly aromatic Gewürztraminer is. Another original wine that is not found anywhere else in Italy is that produced with Grüner-Veltliner, and is subtle, fresh with typical green overtones.
