Terra di Lavoro 2020
Terre di Lavoro red wine is a modern wine with a broad aroma and robust taste, produced on the slopes of the Roccamorfina volcanic mountain. The vineyards extend on the slope that drops towards the Gulf of Gaeta at 400 meters above sea level. The idea of this wine dates back to the early 90s and the first vintage to be bottled was 1994. The success is due to a set of factors: on the one hand, the desire of the Galardi family to produce a fine wine from their land with local grape varieties, on the other hand the intuition of the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella who knew how to interpret it with a modern wine making and aging in barrique. The wine was immediately a national success and with the 1997 vintage it conquered the whole world thanks to the exaltation that Robert Parker made of it. The use of Piedirosso blended with Aglianico is frequent in Campania, as the delicacy of the first helps to dampen the impetuousness of the second. However, there are two important factors that make Terre di Lavoro red wine unique. The first is the proximity of the sea, which increases the brightness on the vineyards, guarantees constant ventilation and favors diurnal range on summer days. The second is the scarcely fertile deep volcanic soil in which the vines of Aglianico and Piedirosso have their roots.
The harvest is manual in mid-October. The de-stemmed grapes ferment in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature with a maceration with the skins for 20 days, during which punching down is carried out several times a day. After racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in steel and subsequently ages for 12 months in new French oak barriques from the forests of Allier and Never.
