Sicilia Bianco Vigna di Gabri 2021
The name of this white wine recalls the will of Gabriella Rallo, founder of Donnafugata, to make the most of the native Ansonica grape. In fact, Vigna di Gabri is a wine based on the Sicilian Ansonica grape, a majority in the blend, distinguished by its fragrance and its roundess. The choice of the other vine varieties was made with the specific aim of creating complexity and harmony around the personality of the Ansonica. The addition of Catarratto brings acidity, of which the Ansonica has little, while the small percentages of Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Viognier increase the range of aromas and create a soft texture on the palate. The grapes come from the Contessa Entellina estate in the province of Palermo, in particular from hills between 200 and 300 meters above sea level with clayey soil rich in limestone and minerals. The wine undergoes cellar-aging to integrate and develop its rich personality.
The harvest took place separately for each variety within a month starting from the second decade of August. In order were picked: Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Viognier and finally Ansonica and Catarratto. For each grape variety, the alcoholic fermentation of the must takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. 15% of the wine ages in second passage French oak barrels in contact with the fine lees, while 85% ages only in steel vats. After blending the two parts, the wine rests for 8 more months in the bottle.
