San Gimignano

San Gimignano white wines

vineyards among the gentle hills of Tuscany

Tuscany’s most popular town for tourists, San Gimignano also gives its name to Italy’s first DOC, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. This is a historical yet modern white wine, produced in a young, fresh version or as a Riserva with an evolved character. But other grape varieties are also cultivated in San Gimignano, especially black grapes used to produce excellent red wines. Although San Gimignano is famous for its white wine, most of the grapes grown in the municipality are black. These are both Sangiovese and other international varieties, and the territory of San Gimignano, half-way between Siena and Florence, is also renowned to produce red wines

La Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Not only was this the first DOC wine in Italy in 1966, but it was already a famous wine in the Middle Ages, indeed Dante cites Vernaccia in the Divine Comedy. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a white wine obtained from the grape variety of the same name, grown on the hill of San Gimignano. It is a typical, traditional wine with a pale colour, a fruity and partly floral aroma with hints of aromatic herbs; the fairly smooth flavour has a medium structure, with discreet acidity and sapidity. Particularly noteworthy is the Riserva, sold after more than a year of ageing, with evolved aromas of nuts, spicy and toasted overtones, and a smooth, sapid flavour. While young Vernaccia is an ideal wine for starters, vegetable and sea dishes, Vernaccia Riserva is well suited for more elaborate dishes with sauces and spices, white meat and fish.
