Pugnitello Somatico 2019
Somatico is the name of an original and exclusive wine produced by Podere il Castellaccio from an old vineyard on the Tuscan coast, in which ancient Tuscan vines survive. It is original and almost against the tide, because it excludes Cabernet and French varieties. The vineyard is located in the DOC Bolgheri area, in the hills overlooking the sea in Castagneto Carducci. Somatico is a bold and aged red wine, produced from old vines that have deep roots and produce few grapes but of great quality. A very limited quantity is produced every year. The grape variety with which Somatico wine is produced is Pugnitello, an unusual Tuscan variety, sometimes used as a complementary to Sangiovese. The characteristics of Pugnitello are the richness of color, the intense fruity aromas and the full taste. In the Somatico wine, Pugnitello interprets the Mediterranean climate of the Tuscan coast, restoring a full-bodied wine with a potential for aging. It differs from the Bolgheri reds based on French varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, on the contrary it is authentically Tuscan and territorial, but it has the same structure and power given by the unique territory of the Tyrrhenian coast of the popural Bolgheri reds.
The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts with a total maceration on the skins for two weeks. Subsequently the wine ages for one year in 500-liter French oak tonneaux and for another twelve months in the bottle.
