Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé 2021 (con astuccio)
The Ben Ryé sweet wine comes from Pantelleria, a volcanic island between Sicily and Africa, warmed by the Mediterranean sun and subject to the constant action of the wind. It is no coincidence that the name Ben Ryé in Arabic means "son of the wind". It is a legendary wine, produced with a particular variety of Moscato, called Moscato di Alessandria, or Zibibbo, a part of which is dried and added to the fermenting must as raisin to give it concentrated fruity flavors and delicious sweetness. It is a fine wine, which requires a careful production and is obtained with very low yields, as only perfectly intact and healthy hand-picked grapes are used.
Passito di Pantelleria Ben Rié is more than a fine dessert wine, it represents the tradition of making wine on the island of Pantelleria and the wine culture of the Mediterranean; its concentration means deep color, captivating smell and superb taste.
The harvest is a complex operation, lasting 4 weeks from mid-August to mid-September. The first harvested bunches are dried in the sun and in the wind for over 2 weeks. Other grapes are harvested in September and freshly pressed; this must is fermented without skins in stainless steel tanks. Being a must rich in sugars, fermentation is slow and, before it is finished, the hand-selected and destemmed berries of the dried grapes are added (the proportion is about 70-75 kg of raisins per 100 kg of must). These macerating give new flavors and sweetness of unfermented sugars. Maceration ends in November. The wine rests in steel tanks for a few months and ages for a year in the bottle before being put on the market.
