Montiano 2019
Montiano is no doubt one of the most important red wines of Lazio and is counted among the great Merlots of Italy. Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella started cultivating Merlot in the hills of Tuscia after having founded the Falesco winery and with the 1993 harvest they produced the first vintage of Montiano. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 300 m in the villages of Montefiascone and Castiglione in Teverina, between Lake Corbara and Lake Bolsena, which are former craters of ancient volcanoes. In fact the soil of the vineyards is of volcanic origin and this characterizes the profile of the wine in a unique way. The yields are particularly low and the grapes are consequently rich in substances and sugars, in order to create structured and complex wines.
The harvest takes place at the beginning of September. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature with maceration. Frequent punching down is carried out to facilitate the extraction of color and noble tannins from the skins. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrique and ages in new oak barrels from Allier and Never for one year.
