Isonzo

Isonzo white wines

A unique territory

In the south-eastern plains of the province of Gorizia, along the banks of the Rivers Isonzo and Judrio, the Bora winds help to create aromatic and structured white wines. The style of wines emerging in this area is well-defined and with great personality. The landscape is a kind of plateau which, from the Eastern hills and the Karst slopes towards the sea along the River Isonzo. The soil is different from that found in the Collio and the Colline Orientali. Here the alluvial soil is formed mainly of gravel and sand, with the occasional presence of clay. The high drainage forces the roots to grow deep. Two sub-areas can be identified on the banks of the Isonzo: the Rive Alte, further upstream on the right-hand bank, and the Rive di Giare, more to the south on the left-hand bank.

Style of Valle dell’Isonzo wines

Wines in the Friuli Isonzo DOC designation tend to be monovarietal, produced from the varieties traditionally grown in the Italian Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The wines tend to have well-defined, particularly floral and fruity aromas, lively freshness, always well integrated with body and alcoholic strength. The Mediterranean climate facilitates the development of aromas of ripe fruit, tending towards sweetness and structure. Red wines are also produced in this area, including Cabernet Franconia, Schioppettino, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pignolo and Refosco dal Peduncolo rosso. The wines may be for immediate consumption or more structured and evolved.
