Etna Rosso 2020
The Etna Rosso wine of the Idda winery is conceived and produced by the collaboration between the Piedmontese winery Gaja and the Sicilian winery Graci. It is almost a pure Nerello Mascalese, the Nerello Cappuccino has a minority role. The two grape varieties, both typical and indigenous to Etna, are in fact complementary like Cabernet and Merlot in the Médoc. Nerello Mascalese is the great variety of the Etnean tradition, it is a purebred grape, which matures slowly, developing an important amount of phenols and maintaining an important acidity. It gives austere, elegant wines destined for long aging. The Nerello Cappuccino is its shoulder, it softens the firmness of the first, adding roundness and fruity notes at mid palate. The grapes for the Etna Rosso Idda come from the southern slope of the Etna DOC appellation, in particular from the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla, at a high altitude, between 700 and 800 meters above sea level.
The grapes are fermented with maceration on the skins for 3 weeks in wooden and concrete vats. The subsequent maturation of 24 months also takes place partly in wooden barrels and partly in concrete tanks.
