Colli di Luni

COLLI DI LUNI WHITE WINES

the vines on terraces overlooking the sea

The ancient Roman city of Luni gives its name to the whole area (Lunigiana) and the local DOC designation (Colli di Luni). This territory lies on the border between Liguria and Tuscany, nestling between the Apuan Alps and the Versilia coast. In these hills, traditional wines are produced with local grape varieties, especially whites made with Vermentino. Most of the vineyards in the Colli di Luni area run through low hills, between 100 and 200 metres above sea level, no more than 14 km from the coast. The vines grow mostly on wide terraces overlooking the sea, and the soil is of sedimentary origin with a good presence of sand and clay. They enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with rainfall mainly in the autumn and winter and breezy summers that are never too hot, thanks to the cool sea winds.

The delicate wines of Colli di Luni

Luni wines were already popular in Roman times, as witnessed by Pliny the Elder. The various types share some features, including an intense, lively colour, fragrant floral and fruity aromas and medium acidity that offers characteristic sapidity. The whites are produced mainly with Vermentino, which here stands out more for its finesse than its structure. The whites produced with the local grape variety Albarola are also interesting. Reds made from a blend of Sangiovese and other varieties are for immediate consumption, pleasantly fresh but not intended for ageing.
