Bolgheri Superiore Il Castellaccio 2020
It is the most important wine of the Podere il Castellaccio winery of Alessandro Scappini, a young local producer and it is distinguished, because it is almost a pure Cabernet franc. Alessandro's vineyards are located in the southernmost part of the appellation, on the hills overlooking the sea behind Castagneto Carducci. It is a ventilated area and thanks to its raised position (140 meters above sea level) it is also affected by relevant temperature variations between night and day. The soil rich in shale and clay shist is particularly favorable for the production of elegant wines. The result is a precise, refined, harmonious wine, not really bold, but with complexity and refreshing power. The label is sophisticated as well, it was designed specifically for this wine by the Livorno artist Andrea Carciola.
The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September. They ferment in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature with indigenous yeasts. The maceration on the skins is very long, reaching up to 45-50 days. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. It ages for one year in French oak barrels and for another year in a ceramic amphora.
