Tenute Silvio Nardi

The first Brunello by Tenute Silvio Nardi was bottled in 1958 and the winery was one of the founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium in 1967. The story began in 1950, when Silvio Nardi, originally from Umbria, bought the Casale del Bosco estate with over 800 hectares of land on the north-western side of Montalcino and founded Tenute Silvio Nardi.
The north-western side is affected by humidity, in fact it is the area of Montalcino with the greatest rainfall and has a cooler microclimate, which gives Brunello more elegance than structure. For this Silvio Nardi decided to buy new vineyards in the opposite area, in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. In particular, the new vineyards are located in Manachiara and Colombaiolo. Silvio Nardi was among the first to mix grapes from different sides to create a balanced Brunello, starting a trend that proved successful and was imitated by many producers.
Starting from 1995 with the Manachiara grapes he produces a single vineyard Brunello, which has become the flagship wine of the winery.
His vineyards are many plots divided between the two areas and are processed separately. In the Casale del Bosco vineyards the soil is mixed with clay and schist at altitudes ranging between 240 and 420 m above sea level. Here he planted Sangiovese clones suitable for the cooler and more humid microclimate. In the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area, on the other hand, the climate is warmer and drier, the vineyards are located at 350 m and have a draining soil made up of sand and quartz on a clayey substrate.
Today his daughter Emilia manages the business; Tenute Silvio Nardi produces 250,000 bottles a year from 80 hectares of vineyards.
