Sergio Mottura is an undisputed leader of Lazio wine; he discovered the potential of the Alta Tuscia area, on the border between Lazio and Umbria, enhancing the local Grechetto grape. The estate has belonged to the Piedmontese Mottura family since 1933; at the end of the 1960s, with the end of sharecropping, Sergio Mottura moved from Piedmont to Lazio to change the estate’s business by adopting specialized viticulture with the aim of producing quality wines.
The estate extends for 130 hectares in an impressive area, with an almost lunar aspect: that of the white limestone ravines of Civitella d'Agliano. The 37 hectares of vineyards, managed organically, reach the edge of the Tiber river. The winery has made a flag of environmental sustainability and has chosen the porcupine as a symbol, a sober animal that lives only in environmentally balanced places.
Sergio Mottura grows both white and black grape varieties, with a preference for native grapes. But he specialized on Grechetto, with studies and experiments, which have led him to success with an iconic wine: Latour a Civitella, made for the first time in 1994 by selecting the best Grechetto grapes from 5 vineyards and aging it in barrique.
