The winery was founded by Luigi Pira in 1950; with the new generation of Gianpaolo Pira the name Pira appears on appreciated labels, starting with Barolo. The family has 12 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba. The soil in Serralunga is the most ancient of all the Langhe, made up of gray limestone, with bluish veins, sometimes stratified with skeleton, fossil sediments, sandy components. And it is this land, porous, that makes wines great. It is no coincidence that only here Nebbiolo grapes give such structured and long-lived wines.
Gianpaolo Pira works with his brothers in an artisanal way and his production philosophy is entirely based on the nature of the vineyards. The range of labels reflects this approach: 3 single vineyard Barolos, a classical Barolo and Barbera and Dolcetto from vineyards that are not suitable for the long ripening cycle of Nebbiolo grapes. We cannot forget that their vineyards are located in some of the most relevant crus of Serralunga d’Alba: Marenca, Margheria and Vigna Rionda.
Gianpaolo is an open minded winemaker; large barrels and barriques coexist in the cellar and are used wisely, to bring out the territorial character of the wines. Headquarter is in the centre of Serralunga d’Alba.
