SICILIAN RED WINES

GRAPES GROWN UNDER THE MEDITERRANEAN SUN

Sicilian wine has an ancient history if you think that Phoenicians, Greeks and Arabs started wine making on the island. The mild climate and the hilly environment have allowed Sicily to become one of the most productive Italian wine regions. Although white berried grapes dominate, Sicilian red wines are very charming, sought-after and also varied. Nero d'Avola is the most important indigenous grape variety and gives wines with great personality, full-bodied, fruity and spicy aromas, also suited to aging. The Frappato grape variety, widespread in the Ragusa area, gives very fruity and softly-textured wines. On the Etna Volcano Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are grown, which gives very elegant, fragrant red wines, endowed with acidity and tannins. Finally, international grapes are widespread as well: Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon and above all Syrah.
