Casamaggio Colorino Toscana 2018
The Colorino grape has a long history in Tuscany as a blending variety that dates back to the 14th century. On its own, Colorino was thought to never be able to achieve ripeness to be a standalone wine; however with climatic changes over the last decade, warmer temperatures and longer growing seasons have allowed Colorino to show ripe fruit and concentration in addition to its powerful color and structure.
The name 'Casamaggio' refers to the old farmhouse directly next to the Colorino vineyard. The front label depicts a map from 1749 representing this farmhouse and the surrounding land.
In the cellar the skins macerate on the juice for two weeks in stainless steel before the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak for 12 months before bottling. 2018 was a very temperate and easy vintage that didn’t have the intense heat spikes or weather challenges of 2017. This vintage was stunning for its intense aromatics and floral notes: it is packed with notes of crushed blackberry, menthol and rather chewy tannins. This is a spectacular vintage for aging as the combination of high acidity with richness, more depth of flavor, truly brings together great potential for further development.
