Bolgheri Sassicaia 2019

Not just an iconic wine, Sassicaia is an extraordinary Cabernet and was the first Italian wine that was able to compete with the finest wines in the world. Sassicaia wine laid the foundations for the birth of the Bolgheri appellation and the renewal of all the enology of Tuscany. Even today it is one of the greatest expressions of Italian wine in the world. It was born as a private wine of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 40s and it was put on the market only with the 1968 harvest. The idea of planting Cabernet in Bolgheri was brilliant, giving life to an absolute champion and setting a new course for Tuscan and Italian wine. In addition to demonstrating the success of Tuscan wine in the world, Sassicaia is a wine of extraordinary elegance, refined more than powerful. It is a masterful interpreter of the Bolgheri area, it is charming without flexing its muscles and can really be long-lived.

2019 vintage was particularly favorable because the warm summer was not affected by heat peaks and allowed for a regular ripening of Cabernet sauvignon and Cabernet franc. In particular, the more pronounced daily temperature range in August facilitated the development of flavor compounds and ensured the right proportion of acidity that makes the taste of Sassicaia so elegant and harmonious. Harmony is perhaps the keyword that most distinguishes Sassicaia 2019.

The grapes come from several vineyards within the estate: some along the avenue of cypresses and some on the hills at over 300 meters above sea level. The harvest is manual, beginning with Cabernet franc and continuing with Cabernet sauvignon. After a selection, grapes are destemmed and alcoholic fermentation occurs in steel vats with spontaneous yeasts. Maceration does not exceed 2 weeks with frequent pumping over and délastage. Malolactic fermentation is also carried out in steel. Sassicaia 2019 has aged for 25 months in French oak barriques, of which a third new, keeping the masses separated by grape variety and vineyards of origin. The final blend is made only at the end of the oak-aging.
