Firriato

Firriato was founded by the Di Gaetano family in the province of Trapani in 1984, but has been able to make great strides. Today it is made up of 6 estates scattered around Sicily, still under the control of the family. In the meantime it has converted the vineyards to organic and has expanded the range of labels produced in different Sicilian appellations; in addition, 2 wine resorts have opened some hospitality estates.
He has been able to make Sicilian wines known off the island thanks to a modern approach that is at the same time respectful of the typical characteristics of the territory.
Four of the estates are located in western Sicily, in the province of Trapani, but they are distinguished by altitude and soil type, in some there is more clay, in others sand prevails. Here they mainly cultivate native grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia, Perricone, Zibibbo, but in some areas also Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay.
On the island of Favignana the soils are calcareous and rich in marine fossils, here Firriato manages the only vineyard on the Egadi islands, cultivated with native varieties. Finally, on Etna Firriato has 84 hectares on the northern slope between 650 and 900 meters above sea level with vines still ungrafted, as the phylloxera does not attack on volcanic soil. Today Firriato owns a total of 470 hectares of vineyards and produces 6 million bottles a year.
