La Crotta di Vegneron was founded as a cooperative winery by 25 families of winemakers in 1980 in Val d’Aosta. The winery is located right in the center of the region, in the so-called middle valley. In forty years the number of winemaking families belonging to the cooperative has more than doubled and their vineyards extend for 20 km between the subregions of Chambave and Nus. 90% of the vineyards are located on the side of the valley facing South between 450 and 800 meters above sea level.
The cooperative's goal was to recover not only the wine tradition but also the defense and protection of the landscape, which is particularly subject to erosion due to the conformation of the valley. In fact, the vineyards are all steep, with slopes ranging from 20% to 35% on the hillside of the mountain. This is why we can speak of mountain viticulture or heroic viticulture, which requires a lot of manual work for the care of the vineyards.
The winemakers mainly cultivate indigenous grape varieties such as Fumin, Vien de Nus, Cornalin, Petite Rouge, Nus Malvoisie. Production settles at 200,000 bottles a year starting from about 40 hectares of vineyards.
