Tenuta Hortense was founded by brothers Corrado and Marcello Fratini in the wine-growing area of Bolgheri, specifically in Castagneto Carducci, in the municipality of Donoratico. The two brothers had founded Tenuta Argentiera in 1999, which they then sold in 2016 to Austrian entrepreneur Stanislaus Turnauer.

Tenuta Hortense covers 1100 hectares, of which 10 are vineyards. As usual in the Bolgheri area, the vines planted are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The production corresponds to 10000 bottles per year and the winery's oenologist is Eric Boissenot, a collaborator of important chateaux in Bordeaux.

The winery places great emphasis on sustainability and the environment and nature. Harvesting is always manual and the grapes are fermented using only indigenous yeasts, which are present on the grapes. Ageing takes place in oak tonneaux.
