Tenuta di Biserno is Ludovico Antinori's new project in the Bolgheri area, after he had founded Ornellaia in the 1980s.
Lodovico and Piero are children of Niccolò Antinori, who had married Carlotta della Gherardesca, sister of Clarice, wife of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. In other words, the creator of Sassicaia (Mario Incisa) was Lodovico's uncle; the young Lodovico immediately understood the extent of that phenomenon and wanted his part of the family property to start a similar enterprise by himself. He thus left the family business (the Marchesi Antinori) to his brother Piero and founded Ornellaia; it was he who created the Masseto wine.
Over the years, however, some wrong moves made him lose control of Ornellaia.
So what did he do? He bought land just north of Bolgheri in the municipality of Bibbona, which borders some of the best Ornellaia’s vineyards. Here he founded an exclusive estate in an uncontaminated place, accessible only by dirt roads. He start producing fine wines along the lines of the Bolgheri model with the collaboration of the great winemaker Michel Rolland. At Tenuta di Biserno he also creates an elite relais, for a few guests at a time.
The beautiful vineyards lie on a hill from which you can see the Tyrrhenian Sea, that is just a few kilometers away.
The wines are treated in detail and even if they cannot boast the Bolgheri DOC, because the vineyards fall outside the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, the style is the same, with an eye entirely on class and elegance.
