Pommery

The history of the maison de Champagne Pommery begins in 1858 in Reims, when Louis Alexandre Pommery took over a modest business from Narcisse Greno, who had founded it in 1836. However, it was Louise Pommery to give prestige to the maison, given the untimely death of her husband. Pommery quickly became a popular brand thanks to the Maison's large production capacity. Madame Pommery bought vineyards in the most suitable areas of the region and to cope with the maison’s production she bought old chalk quarries, to be transformed into aging cellar for her Champagnes. It was a huge building work for the time, the result is 18 km of tunnels dug 30 meters deep under the city of Reims, capable of holding over 20 million bottles.
Pommery soon created the dry taste for champagne, with her label Pommery Nature first produced in 1874, when Champagne was mostly sweet. The reason of this change was the satisfaction of the English demanding market, which had a preference for dry wines.
The characteristics of the maison's style are finesse and lightness, that are common to a wide range of different labels.
The Pommery estate includes the Clos Pompadour, a 25-hectare vineyard protected by a wall, the largest of its kind in Champagne.
Since 1996 the maison has belonged to the Vranken group.
