Pol Roger

Pol Roger is the smallest of the great maisons, those belonging to the "Grande Marques", and it enjoys a very high reputation both among consumers and specialized critics. It was founded by Pol Roger at the age of eighteen in 1849 in Aÿ; at the beginning of the 1900s the winery moved to Epernay where it is still located today. The base of its production is the Pinot Noir of the Montagne de Reims and a solid and powerful Champagne style. For a century Pol Roger worked with purchased grapes; they started buying vineyards only in the second half of the 1900s to reach the current 90 hectares, which is still accompanied by the purchase of grapes from third parties. Pol Roger’s success was linked from the beginning of its activity to the English market becoming an official supplier of the English court in 1877. One of Pol Roger's most famous clients was Winston Churchill, who also became a close friend of the family until his death in 1965. It was for this reason that in 1984 the maison decided to name its prestige cuvée after him. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is still considered today one of the most prestigious and elaborate Champagne labels: made only with grapes from Grand Cru villages and based on Pinot Noir, it has a solid and powerful taste, just as the English politician liked.

The grapes grown and purchased are shared equally among the three Champagne varieties. A unique feature of Pol Roger is its deep cellar, dug 33 meters underground, which guarantees very low temperatures for the maturation of Champagne on the lees; this assures very fine bubbles and an elegant taste. In the 7.5 km of underground tunnels over 8 million bottles rest on the lees and remuage is entirely done by hand. Pol Roger works with great precision right from the clarification of the must which takes place with cold decanting and the steel fermentation of the base wines that also carry out malolactic fermentation.
