Petra

The Petra winery was founded in 1997 in Suvereto by Vittorio Moretti, owner of Bellavista in Franciacorta. Suvereto is an ancient village in the Val di Cornia, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany. The name "Suvereto" evokes the cork oaks (“Severe” or “Sughere” in Italian) that historically grew in this area, where today the vineyard coexists with the Mediterranean scrub.
The construction of Petra winery was commissioned to the Swiss architect Mario Botta, who made it a contemporary architecture project. Botta's work enhances the territory and integrates the building construction with the landscape by exploiting the slope of the hill. The winery was also built in such a way as to exploit gravity to move the wine in the various stages of processing, without having to make use of pumps.

Petra's 100 hectares of vineyards have been converted to organic farming and have been studied by a great agronomist such as Professor Scienza, leading to a real internal zoning of the estate. The soils are heterogeneous, stony and partly calcareous; some are alluvial in nature rich in mineral elements and others are made up of a layer of silt.

In these lands Petra mainly cultivates international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, following the trend of successful red wines made along the Tuscan coast.
The Val di Cornia area extends between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the metalliferous hills. The climate is Mediterranean, generally warm, but benefits from the refreshing sea breezes.
The Petra winery is committed to being eco-sustainable by reducing the energy impact and CO2 emissions.
