For a century the Paternoster family has been producing wines on the Vulture in Basilicata. The Vulture is a mountain of volcanic origin, suitable for the cultivation of Aglianico grapes. Three generations have succeeded to bring Paternoster wines to success, in particular Aglianico del Vulture, the only DOC in Basilicata. It was Giuseppe in particular, after having studied enology in Conegliano in Veneto, who gave the winery the change in the direction of quality; he was responsible for the fame of Paternoster wines.
In 2016 Paternoster was partially acquired by the Venetian Tommasi family, maintaining a partnership with the original family. The environment is mountainous in terms of altitude (over 600 meters above sea level) and distance from the coast. So even if the latitude is southern and the sun in summer affects the vineyards in an important way, the temperatures during the night drop a lot and this guarantees aromas and acidity in the wine.
The property extends for 20 hectares around the town of Barile. These are many small plots of vineyards conducted with organic farming. Some of these represent real crus, historically recognized, such as Rotondo, Macarico, Pian di Carro and Gelosia.
