Historical winery in the Bolgheri area, that together with Sassicaia contributed to the worldwide success of this wine region. The Ornellaia estate orignated following the success of another wine: Sassicaia. Lodovico Antinori, having obtained his part of the estate that the Antinori had in Bolgheri, founded Ornellaia in 1981 with one goal: to make a luxury wine. On his mind, it had to be a wine for the American and international wine lovers, used to buy expensive wines of Bordeaux and California. With the 1985 vintage the first Ornellaia wine was released. After a few years, none other than Robert Mondavi took part, confirming the international character of the estate, which had hired collaborators from the main wine regions of the world such as Axel Heinz and Michel Rolland. After a series of company changes since 2005, Ornellaia has passed into the hands of Frescobaldi, who has carried on the business with the same passion and the same spirit of its origins.
The strength of Ornellaia lies in its vineyards, which are located in the hilly area of ​​the Bolgheri amphitheater, one of the most prestigious areas of the entire denomination. Ornellaia has never stopped developing and improving; it has produced Masseto, a great 100% Merlot, for which Frescobaldi wanted to create a dedicated cellar. Also part of the production range are two white wines of great charm: Poggio alle Gazze and Ornellaia white, based on Sauvignon blanc.
