Giuseppe Cortese winery, now run by Pier Carlo, has been a main exponent of modern Barbaresco for 50 years now; their vineyards extend in one of the most prestigious cru of the appellation: Rabajà.
Rabajà extends for just over 15 hectares in the municipality of Barbaresco, between 235 and 315 meters above sea level and faces west and south-west. The Barbaresco wine from Rabajà is appreciated for its full and decisive character.
In 1971 the winery was founded by Giuseppe Cortese, assisted by the family; the first Barbaresco was born. It is the new generation that now manages the operations with the same energy and consistency. Pier Carlo Cortese defines himself as a "wine artisan" and works with precision to preserve what grapes transmit; he adopts a non-interventionist approach, based on spontaneous fermentations, the use of concrete vat for fermentations and large wood for aging.
For the Chardonnay-based white he is also experimenting with wine making in terracotta amphora. He has no certifications, but works organically with manure and green manure as fertilizers, copper and sulfur to protect the vines from diseases. He processes only his own grapes.
