The della Gherardesca family has lived in the Castagneto Carducci district – corresponding nowadays to the production area of Bolgheri wines - since 1100 and has been an important bulwark, which has protected and defended the territory, by staying in the Castle of Donoratico, of which only the Tower remains.
The lands where most of Bolgheri wines’ vineyards grow belonged in the past to the Gherardesca family, which still has important possessions in the area. It was therefore quite natural that the heir of the dynasty, Count Gaddo della Gherardesca, began producing wine under the name Bolgheri with a label of his own. In fact, in the first half of the twentieth century the Gherardesca family had produced wine in the cellars of the Castle for several years.
Today Count Gaddo produces his wine in the La Bolgherese winery: a single Bolgheri Rosso DOC label called Castello di Donoratico. The first edition was 2016, made in a limited number of bottles, almost like a test.
